They're making out within hours of meeting, smexing within a day or so and declaring their undying love within a week. There isn't an instant attraction/love between Nick and Becca, but it comes close. Though the romance happened very quickly in Hearts in Darkness, the sexual tension made it believable. I wasn’t captivated by it like I was for example, with Ms Kaye's Hearts in Darkness, a novella, and my favourite of hers. Where this let me down slightly was in the actual romance. The next hero, Shane McCallan and his heroine are introduced here and their story is up next in Hard as You Can. The other team members are described in delicious detail and hopefully each will get a story. Though there is a conclusion to this story, an arc to uncover the mystery of the ambush and the five survivors' discharges from the military, looks to continue in subsequent books. I enjoyed seeing the bond holding this band of brothers together, along with Nick's brother, Jeremy and their relationships playing out. Characterisations are one of Ms Kaye’s strengths. Nick (and the rest of the team!) is no exception. I’ve never met a Laura Kaye hero I haven’t loved. With his brother, Jeremy he now owns and works the Hard Ink Tattoo. Nick, former Army Special Forces, has been out for a year with an Other Than Honorable discharge from the military. When Becca Merritt's brother, Charlie disappears leaving only the above message for her, she seeks out Nick Rixey. Find Rixey, the Colonel's team, Hard Ink Tattoo.
